Development Academy is perfect for all ages and all skill levels! Why? Because we have a spot for everyone's age and skill level allowing every athlete to continue to develop and understand the game! We have groups for beginners, elites and everyone in between in all age groups; elementary school middle school and high school.
Never played before? No problem! We always have a group that is very new to the game. We have loaner sticks and sticks for you to buy at a much lower price than local sports stores. You just need to bring a mouthguard, shinguards and a good attitude and we take care of the rest!
Our Spring Development Academy has four session options from mid March to late May. New in 2018 is our all location play day where all of our locations compete against each other on May 26th which will reinforce the skills that we have learned and developed upon. Players are grouped by age and skill level.
Our Fall Development Academy has three location options from early September and ending with our successful "All Location Play Day" where all of our locations compete against each other on November 10th.
Our Winter Development Academy typically runs from early December to early March. Winter options also consist of field hockey skill development and Indoor field hockey development.
Winter 207-18 season we offer Friday, Saturday and Sunday winter clinics in Sterling, VA at the Dulles Sportsplex. Friday clinics open to JV and Varsity athletes and Saturday & Sunday clinics open to 4th-8th graders.
Players are grouped by age and skill level.
Sessions: Every sessions includes at least an hour of instruction and at least 30 minutes of game time. Girls are split into their appropriate age groups- typically teams of 5th graders and under, 6-8th grade, and a mix of high schoolers.
Once we establish the basics, we form teams based on friends, ages, and experience so they can scrimmages in-house against each other but the focus on technical improvement. Tryouts are not required and all skill levels are welcome for girls 3rd grade through 10th grade.
The Academy program is a non-competitive, first-come first-serve program focused on growing the game and players joy for the sport. Groups are placed in loose teams each season, but the intention is not competition, rather to increase players' joy in the game and give athletes the opportunity to grow their skills.
Girls will play scrimmages in-house against each other but the focus is on technical improvement. Tryouts are not required. This program is for girls looking to learn the sport or to improve their field hockey skills without the commitment of weekly traveling to tournaments. Players will receive the same high-level coaching as our other teams, but do not travel to competitions. Academy and clinics are a great way to stay involved in the off-season, learn the sport for the first time, or get to know our programs before jumping into our partner club, Southeast Storm.
As our academy is non-competitive, our development players can "graduate" to club as they gain skill and are able to commit to a higher, more intense level of play. We encourage those new to non-school based sports to try at least a season of Academy before attempting to play club, as it will give these players a strong foothold into our culture and style of play. We also encourage those who simply do not have the time or want a lower level of commitment to play development with us during any season.
For both programs, we strive to teach a strong technical and tactical base of the game. We only employ USA Field Hockey certified and background checked coaches. We work to give all athletes the joy, confidence and camaraderie that comes from playing field hockey and team sports.
