Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions that are not answered here, please feel free to contact us.

What session should I choose for my child?
This winter, we have 4 developmental sessions.

Our Tuesday sessions are for our elementary school athletes (1st-6th grade). There are two 1-hour sessions. The 5-6pm session is for beginners, those that have little to no field hockey experience or knowledge. The 6-7pm, is for intermediate players who have some knowledge and experience of the sport.

Wednesdays are for our middle school and high school athletes (6th-10th grade) with field hockey knowledge and experience. They are run by Coach Dana and Coach Kelsey. This session is a pretty popular choice as our past winter seasons have shown. These coaches keep things fun yet game-like. You will be focusing on individual skill in game-like situations. This sessions is created for mostly intermediate - variety athletes, however if you are a beginner you are still welcome!! Our coaches will get you all caught up and confident :)

Our Sunday developmental session is open to 3rd - 12th athletes regardless of their experience and knowledge of field hockey. This is a good session for all beginners to experienced players. Coach Derek will keep things fun and relaxed. Starting with the basics, Sundays are encouraged to be beginner to intermediate players as the turf will have a wider range of age levels. If you are a varsity player and would like to go to Sunday sessions, you will still learn a lot from coach Derek!

We will also be having our Make the Team Series this winter. This session is for the athletes that have team experience and are looking for a little more than our developmental sessions, but do not necessarily want to make the commitment to a field hockey club team. Our Make the Team Series will take place on Fridays and will be run by Catholic University Head Coach, Heidi Lewis. This session is not open to beginner/novice athletes. You are assumed to know the basics and rules of the game so that coach Heidi can teach you more about the game - field hockey IQ! There are some requirements for this session. Come and learn from one of the best coaches in the DMV area! Click here for more information.

What is the difference between Make the Team Series and Development Academy?
Our Make the Team Series focuses more on the team aspect of the the game. There is typically more scrimmaging and game play. This is a good choice if your child wants to play on a club team, but you cannot make the commitment for any reason. Our development sessions focus more on the individual technical and tactical skills. These sessions are non-competitive. For more information on the difference between the two, click here.

What happens if I miss a session?
You are more than welcome to make up a missed session. Please email Taleah Scott ( and Kelsey Bowman ( with your child’s name, the session they are signed up for, and the date and time of the session that you would like to attend for your make up.

How will I know if a session is cancelled due to weather?
Yes, we will still play in the rain. For the winter season, we will still hold our sessions if the roads are drivable and the facilities are open. If the session is cancelled, you will receive an email from your coach about an hour and half prior to the session. All cancellations will be posted to our Beyond Sticks Facebook page as well.
